Jamaican-Style Patties

Serves: 6

Ingredients: Method:
For the pastry

  • 150g plain flour
  • 75g margarine
  • 1tsp water
  • ½ tsp turmeric

For the filling

  • 150g beef mince
  • ½ red onion, diced
  • 1 garlic clove, crushed
  • 1 red chilli, finely sliced
  • 1 tbsp breadcrumbs
  • ¼ tsp dried thyme
  • ¼ tsp all spice
  • 1 tsp tomato paste
  • Salt & Pepper for seasoning
  • 1 Egg, beaten for egg wash
  1. To make the pastry, place the flour, margarine and turmeric into a mixing bowl. Rub together until it forms a bread crumb consistency.  Now add the water to bring the dough together. Wrap in clingfilm and allow to chill.
  2. To make the filling, heat a frying pan on a medium heat and add the minced beef. Once the beef is browned, add the onions, garlic and chilli and continue to cook until soft.
  3. Add a splash of water and then add the breadcrumbs, herbs, spices, tomato paste, salt and pepper to form your filling. Allow this to cool.
  4. Roll out your pastry and cut around a 5-inch plate. Egg wash one half of the pastry, add the filling to the middle, fold over the pastry and crimp the edges by hand or with a fork.
  5. Place onto a lined baking tray and egg wash the top, bake at 170˚C in a preheated oven for 20 minutes.
