Parent / Guardian Notice – Serving School Lunches for Children with Type 1 Diabetes

July, 2025

As a leading and responsible catering company, we have a duty to comply with food safety laws. We aim to serve meals made with high-quality, freshly produced food that meets food safety and hygiene standards, is enjoyable, balanced, and safe to eat.  We recognise that some children have type 1 diabetes, and our objective is to serve them with food which meets the needs of their medical condition.

The Company considers that proper communication and exchange of accurate information between everyone concerned is key for your child’s medical condition to be managed in the best interests of your child whilst at school.

If your child has type 1 diabetes, you must send a completed “Management of Food Service to Children with Type 1 Diabetes Form” to the school office for us to serve them.

This is required so that you can:

  • identify and confirm that your child has type 1 diabetes,
  • produce professional medical evidence to confirm the type 1 diabetes,
  • give the school permission to provide an up-to-date photograph of your child to the school kitchen along with your completed form, and
  • confirm you will update the school about any changes to your child’s type 1 diabetes.

A completed Management of Food Service to Children with Type 1 Diabetes form allows the school and Harrison to:

  • understand the severity of the risks involved,
  • put a process in place so that your child is identified when being served with food. Part of this process included the school providing an up-to-date photograph of your child to the school kitchen, and
  • Confirms that a nominated member of school staff presents your child at the servery counter and measures the correct amount of food that your child should eat.

Carbohydrate counts are generated by our software platform – Civica Catering Management and provide estimated nutrient content for the various items served within your School when using HCS recipes and menus.

Nutrient values are given as portion size for each menu item.

There are some caveats when interpreting the nutritional information provided:

  • Recipe Accuracy: Nutrient values are calculated based on the specified Harrison recipes. It is assumed that the recipes are accurately followed during food preparation. Any deviations from the recipes could impact the actual nutrient content.
  • Ingredient Variability: There might be slight variations in nutrient content due to differences in ingredients purchased, preparation methods, natural ingredient variation and serving sizes. This could lead to minor discrepancies in the actual carbohydrate values compared to the estimates provided on the Saffron analysis.
  • Consistency in Portion Sizes: We assume that the portion sizes for each menu item remain relatively consistent throughout the week and adhere to the school food plan. This assumption is based on the generated portion weight from our software. Differences in portion size served in the individual school will lead to differences in nutrient content.
  • Nutritional Information Source: The nutrient values provided are estimated. It is assumed that the nutritional information source for these values is reliable and up-to-date, ensuring that the estimates are as accurate as possible. We use McCance & Widdowson’s dataset for our analysis, as well as data provided by our suppliers using product codes.
  • Standardised Measurement: The nutrient values are presented in grams per portion and grams per 100g. It is assumed that the measurements are standardised and consistent across all menu items for accurate comparison and dietary planning.

We will work with the school to ensure that the type 1 diabetes is managed in the best interests of your child.

Please be assured that any personal data will be processed in accordance with our privacy policy, which can be found on the company’s website www.harrisoncatering.co.uk.
